Letterforms Dissection

Figure 2.1 analyzing letters, Week 7 (08/11/2024)

h : The letter h has lots of small curves, the inner inside has a bigger curve. The ascender is very straightforward because it only has 1 top serif which makes it more simpler than the bottom part.

o : This letter may look like a normal circle but it is actually quite asymmetrical because it can be fit with many different circles in different angles.

g : Descender part of the letter has a more complex look that consist of many different curves because the shape looks more odd. The upper part is more basic because its just a slightly asymmetrical circle shape with a short line sticking out of the right side.

b : This letter has 1 top serif at the ascender and a big curve on the bottom part which makes it quite straightforward.

Sketch

We were instructed to sketch our own style of letters using different variation of markers. So first i just wrote down a bunch of H,O,G,B so that i can be more familiar with the markers, after that, i moved on to writing the neat H,O,G,B letters so that i can get an idea of it.

Figure 2.2 Trying the markers, Week 7 (04/11/2024)

I made 9 different variations in the end, each marker resulted in 3 variations. I tried exploring by making thick letter design, thin letter designs as well as trying out different writing positions.

Figure 2.3 Writing the letters with different markers, Week 7 (05/11/2024)

I decided to stick with the design where the letters are composed from stiff strokes because it looks really interesting and after that i moved on to the digitalization process.

Digitalization

I started by putting the guidelines so that i can make a proper letter with proper size. After putting the guidelines i moved on to making the letters.

Figure 2.5 Placing the guidelines, Week 8 (15/11/2024)

The letters are made from rectangles, i adjusted the corners of each rectangle so that it could fit properly. After that i moved on to making the ends of the letters more rounded but still have a stiff look, i achieved this using shape builder and cut each individual overlapping shape.

Figure 2.7 Digitalization process, Week 8 (15/11/2024)

This is the outcome of it and after getting feedback, i realized that there is still quite a lot of mistakes made such as an inconsistent base, wrong height for some letters, and incorrect punctuations. Because of this reason, i decided to remake the whole thing with a base.

Figure 2.8 Final look (first attempt), Week 8 (15/11/2024)

I began the remaking process by making the baseline using a stroke with 65 pt thickness and then i convert the strokes into an object with an outline.

I then made all the necessary letters and punctuations using that base.

Figure 2.10 Letters without details, Week 9 (20/11/2024)

Next, i moved on to making the details and rounding the ends of each letter so that it looks better and more organic. For the first step, i rounded of the ends of the letter, next, i a small change to make the letter more detailed and for the final step, i made the inner inside of the letter rounder. I made sure to make the details more subtle so that it doesn't look crude and overwhelming.

Figure 2.12 Process of designing the letters, Week 10 (26/11/2024)

After making the details, i then use a pathfinder to unite the different objects into one single object. I then use a rectangle tool to measure the size of the Ascender height, cap line, median line, and descender height.

Figure 2.13 Final outcome (second and final attempt),Week 10 (26/11/2024)

After that, i moved on to Fontlab so that i can convert it into a usable font. Inside Fontlab, i made changes to the font info so that it could fit my letters properly.

Figure 2.14 Putting the letters inside Fontlab, Week 11 (04/12/2024)

I made some minor changes to some of the letters and punctuation, such as the size, positioning, and the hashtag symbol, as well, because it was too slanted. I also made some changes to the side-bearings, and after that, I exported it so that I could use it as a proper font.

I tested it in Adobe illustrator, i made 3 different posters to see how my font would look.

Figure 2.16 Making the posters, Week 12 (12/12/2024)

First i made the poster with an idea where the letters are arranged into a trapezoid shapes to imitate a trapezoid looking lamps that is placed on the ceiling. I also made a light effect look my making several copies of the 8pt size letters.

Figure 2.17 1st poster, Week 12 (09/11/2024)

Next i made a poster design where i focused on filling the whole page so that it doesn't look bland. The 8 pt size letters are used as a border.

Figure 2.18 2nd poster, Week 12 (12/12/2024)

For the final poster i made a light bulb shape and using the 8 pt size letter as a light effect. I decided to go with the third design because it captures the sentence and the composition is fairly decent.

FEEDBACK HERE

Week 8 (independent learning week)

Week 9

Specific feedback : The letters should have a consistent base that we can work off, remake some of the letters in a more consistent way.

General feedback : Pay attention to the letter t, the height is crucial.

Week 10

Specific feedback : There shouldn't be too many details on the letter because its going to look crude.

General feedback : -

Week 11

Specific feedback : -

General feedback : -

Week 12

Specific feedback : The hashtag is too slanted, make it less diagonal.

General feedback : -

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
During the process, I was quite intimidated because I never would have thought I would be making my own font with my own style of writing, but in the end, it was really interesting to see the step-by-step process of making a font.

Observation :
I found out that making the punctuations are actually quite tricky, they have their own rules that we must follow and i was not aware of this until Mr. Vinod pointed it out.

Findings :
Details are actually quite important but then if you add too much, it will look over the top and we want to avoid that when making a style of writing on our own.

Figure 5.1 Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton, Week 11 (03/11/2024)

By describing the expansion of space in all directions, the modern grid has slipped past the classical frame of the page. Modern architecture had also displaced the centered facades of classical buildings with things like broken planes, modular elements, and the continuous ribbon of rainbows.

Herbert Bayers for the Bauhaus are manifestos for a new typographic order. Bayer intended on making the entire page as a surface to be divided, rather than provide a decorative frame or a centered title. Points, short hatches, and lines of type indicate axes for folding the sheet and positioning the text.

If letters in a typeface are placed too uniformly, they can make a pattern that doesn't look uniform. Gaps can occur around letter such as W,Y,V,T,L whose forms angle outwards or frame an open space such.
