GESTALT THEORY

The gestalt theory in simple terms is how we see things and make sense of them such as patterns, elements, whole images.

Closure : elements with missing parts/information where we can complete the missing parts/information by ourselves with just a simple inspection

Figure & Ground : elements that can be seen as an object (the figure) and the background (the ground) by our brain. Our brain will automatically focus on either the object or the background and from that, our eyes will see an image.

Continuity : elements such as curves and lines that will provoke our eyes to follow it naturally

Proximity : things that are similar and related with one and another and are usually placed near each other because they are alike

Similarity : elements that are similar in shape/look where they can be categorized as a group

Symmetry & order : elements that can be seen as symmetrical that are connected

HIERARCHY

Hierarchy can help guide the readers/viewers on which text/elements is the most important to the less important ones. It can be done by arranging the images in a specific way or make the more bold/ standout.

GOLDEN RATIO

The golden ratio may help create balance and a natural looking artwork by using a spiral looking element as a guideline for composition. It helps artist to create a visually appealing and harmonious piece.

RULE OF THIRDS

The rule of thirds can help artists create balance for the artworks by using lines as a guide on where to place the objects.

Figure 2.3

ALIGNMENT

Alignment may create a neat looking artwork/image because the images, words and elements are placed in a way where they are organized. The most common approach is by putting the images, words and elements on the left or right.

TASK

Figure & Ground:

The image below shows an image of two faces facing each other or a butterfly depending on how we look at it

Figure 3.1

Closure:

If we fill in the missing shapes and elements for the images below they will depict different animals from a duck, a swan, an eagle and an owl.

Figure 3.2

Continuation:

A principle in design where our eyes follows an element that may depict a path, arrows, lines, etc. The image below shows us a mountain with a road where there is someone walking on it, the road stretches very far, even beyond that mountain, most likely.

Figure 3.3

CONTRAST

Contrast refers to the colors that strongly standout from each other making the image much more striking such as the image below where there is a bright yellow sunflower inside a black lightbulb with a white background.

EMPHASIS

The most dominant element inside an image or artwork is usually an emphasis such as the image below where there is a dominant and overarching element of a red dragon standing on top of the strong currents.

BALANCE

there are two types of balance in design principle, Asymmetrical balance and Symmetrical balance.

Asymmetrical balance is where an image/artwork doesn't have an even element or look but is still balanced to the eye after further inspection.

Symmetrical balance is where an image/artwork is completely or almost even where the eye can instantly recognize it as even like the image below where the image gets mirrored and the result is that the left and right side are both very even.

REPETITION

Repeating elements that are pretty much identical that are present in images/artwork such as the image below where there are repeating squares.

Figure 3.7

MOVEMENT

A still image/artwork that contains elements that looks like it is moving because of the look. It can be done with elements such as lines, curves and etc. The image below has a trippy like effect where it can trick the viewers by making it look like the curves are moving even though they are just a still image.

HARMONY & UNITY

An image that looks pleasing and harmonious (nothing jumps out at you). It can be done by having similar color or shapes so that everything fits together nicely like the image below where it looks very pleasing and soft.

Figure 3.9

SYMBOL

A very simple and easily understandable images  that is mainly used to communicate effectively to the viewers such as the image below where most people will be able to identify the image almost instantly about rocks falling down from what looks like a cliff.

WORD & IMAGE

Commonly seen in promotional posters, it refers to an image and the words having relations with each other. The words will usually add more information related to the image/artwork present such as the promotional poster below where there is a man playing a saxophone and there are words explaining further about it being a jazz and heritage festival.

The Flame of Ambition

Artist : Thechristpman
Year : 2021
Medium : Digital Print (Clip Studio Paint and Adobe Photoshop
Size : 3840 x 4800 px

This fan art comes from a popular game that is known as Elden Ring, and this artwork perfectly captures the game's dark fantasy aesthetic, with incredible attention to detail in the character accompanied with a soft background. The warrior stands in a strong, balanced composition, with the circular halo subtly framing their head, drawing the eye towards the centre. The contrast between the warm, fiery sky and the cool metallic armour makes the figure stand out even more. Every element, from the intricate engravings on the armour to the rough textures of the fabric, adds depth and realism, making the character feel like they belong in the game's brutal world. The character looks like it is about to face off against someone or something menacing, gripping the sword with determination. The combination of detailed linework and soft shading gives the artwork a polished yet slightly rugged feel, fitting perfectly with Elden Ring's visual style.
