LECTURES

Week 4 :

In week 4, we were taught about the gradient and its usages, it gives 2D object a 3D look. There are a couple of different methods to do the gradient effect :

First method

  1. Go to object - create a gradient mesh - use the direct selection tool to move the colors around
  2. Go to edit - edit colors and adjust the color balance
Second method
  1. Download color palette as a jpeg format - image trace and choose colors based on how many colors you have on your photo - expand and ungroup
  2. Select white - select - same and fill color
  3. Select the color that we want - fill - new color group -give it a name- create swatches

Week 5 :

During week 5, we had an online class, Mr. Hafiz gave us a pdf that we should study about and apply it to our work. Perspective is a fundamental part of sketching and should always be considered.

Week 6 :

There are no classes for this week because of the Deepavali holiday, we continued our assignments.

TASK

SKETCH AND REFERENCE BOARD

So for the first step, we were asked to make the sketches for the setting/background, i decided to make 3 sketches for my first attempt.

Figure 3.1 First sketch attempt

The sketches i made during the first attempt did not have a frame ink composition and because of that i remade the sketch with a medium shot.

Figure 3.2 Second Sketch attempt

The second attempt sketch doesn't really fit the references and because of that i decided to make another sketch that has a similar concept but with a big, medium, small look.

Framed ink reference

The big, medium, small looks very interesting, it gives the image or picture more depth.

DIGITALIZATION

So for the first step of the digitalization process, I made the base shapes first to get a rough idea of it, and i placed my character in the environment.

Figure 3.6 Base shapes

After the base shapes, i moved on to making the shading for the rocks. i use 2-3 colors for the rocks and gave them a variety of colors.

Figure 3.7 Shading for the rocks

After the shading, i moved on to making the details for the rocks so that it doesn't look to repetitive and bland.

Figure 3.8 Making rock details

I made the ground as the next step, i made them in different shapes, sizes and colors so that it has some variety. There is some gaps because its gonna covered with red to imitate lava.

Figure 3.9 Making the ground

I use 4 different layers for the lava, first layer as the main red color, second layer is the light yellow color, third layer is the dark yellow, fourth layer is the orange color. I use a brush for the light yellow, dark yellow, and orange.

Figure 3.10 Making the lava

Because the lava looks flat, i decided to use a brush with a gaussian blur to give it some smoke like effect and after that its done.

I added a new shape that covered the whole image and made the blending option to color burn to make the environment look more hostile.

REFLECTIONS

EXPERIENCE :

During this exercise, it feels very intriguing because there is so much things that you could do, it is basically limitless, there are infinite possibilities, you can make different shapes, give it different colors, give it some special effects, i manage to make something that i am proud with, it is a very fun exercise overall and very tiring as well.

OBSERVATION :

From my perspective i learned that combining simple shapes could work wonders when making little details for the objects, it doesn't really need a complex look.

FINDINGS :

During my time in Adobe Illustrator i tried different methods to create different looks such as the gaussian blur usage during the making of the smoke lava effect, and for the background clouds as well. I searched up different rocks to see which one would fit the ground better because because that part is still quite vague during the sketching process and after doing some research, i proceeded with the shattered rocks look with lava flowing through.
