LECTURES

Week 1 :

We were given some fundamental videos by Mr. Hafiz so that we are able to learn the basics of adobe illustrator.

Week 2 :

Mr. Hafiz gave us a tutorial on how to use the pen tool, we were told to practice our skills in "The Bezier Game" so that we are used to the pen tool and can utilize it effectively.

Week 3 :

We learn more about adobe illustrator, we followed instructions on how to make an Adidas logo. We used varieties of techniques to make different shapes so that it could resemble the logo as close as possible.

In class we also learn that shapes could define a character, this means that it is essential for the artist to know about the context of each characters because different shapes can convey different expressions.

RESEARCH AND IDEATION

REFERENCES

These are the references for my vormator creation, they are various demons from different series such as Surtr from Thor: Ragnarok and Lord of Terror from Diablo IV.

Figure 3.1 References for my vormator creation

SKETCH

Figure 3.2 Rough sketch of my vormator creation

Rough sketch for my vormator character, it resembles a menacing demon that has a large body, he has multiple horns on his head and has large claws. He has a triangular shape body because he is supposed to be menacing and powerful.

DIGITILIZATION

Figure 3.3 Base shape of the vormator figure

During the making of my vormator, i made the basic shapes and gave it some simple colors as the first step so i can get the rough idea of it. Because the variety of shapes are limited, i had to be creative to make different combinations to achieve different shapes.

Figure 3.4 Combinations of shapes

After the base shapes, i moved on to the details to make it less flat. The process is quite simple because i just utilize the shape builder to make different shadows/details. I also added more spikes to make it more intimidating and added more color variations.

FINAL RESULT

Figure 3.8 Baalthazar

BACKGROUND STORY

Baalthazar is one of the four generals of Hell, feared for his immense size, terrifying strength, and ruthless nature. Once a celestial being, he was cast out of the heavens after his ambition to rule over all creation led him to betray the divine. His transformation into a demon was violent and complete, turning him into a menacing figure with blackened skin, burning eyes, and massive horns. Armed with a blood-stained battle axe, Baalthazar has become a symbol of destruction, leading Hell’s armies in countless wars and showing no mercy to those who stand in his way.

Known for his unforgiving leadership, Baalthazar inspires fear even among his own troops. He rules through intimidation, punishing failure with brutal force and showing no tolerance for weakness. Unlike other demons who thrive on manipulation, Baalthazar believes only in raw power and domination. His ultimate ambition is to overthrow Lucifer himself and claim the throne of Hell, and with every battle he fights, he grows closer to fulfilling that twisted dream.

RATIONALE

From this exercise i manage to learn many different things in adobe illustrator, i learn how to make a proper figure with a distinct expression. I also learn how to use the pathfinder and the shape builder tool to achieve many different shapes in an effective way. We manage to learn many useful tips and shortcut keys to help us on our adobe illustrator journey, we were also given exercises like the vormator challenge to sharpen our skills further.

During the vormator challenge, we were told to use only the available shapes given by Mr. Hafiz ,this made it very challenging because the shapes were very limited which means we need to get really creative to make different combinations so that we could achieve different looks for the vormator figure. We were also taught to use the shape builder tool to make shading for the character to add more detail and so that the figure doesn't look flat.

Overall the challenge is really fun and quite hard because of the limited shapes, it forces creative and critical thinking to achieve something unique. We manage to learn many different things and were able to make our own vormator figure with its own distinct character.

REFLECTIONS

EXPERIENCE :

I was really excited from the start because the main premise of Illustration and Visual Narrative was to make wild things from our imagination, this drives creativity which in my opinion, is where the fun's at.
Adobe illustrator is also a really fun and intriguing software to use, it is very flexible which is perfect for artists, i am looking forward for future assignments.

OBSERVATION :

Nailing the shading is quite tricky in my opinion because it has to be somewhat realistic, i need to explore and practice further so that i can make a more "neat" looking character. The shape builder can also be quite confusing with the shape placements, i have to make it more tidy.
