LECTURES

Week 5 :

Typo_5_Understanding

Letter forms can sometimes appear symmetrical but if we inspect it closely, there is usually a small difference in size.

Figure 1.1 Assymetrical letterforms (23/10/2024)

The complexity of letterforms can be seen from the lowercase "a" from two similar fonts which is Helvetica and Univers.

Figure 1.2 Complexity of letterforms (23/10/2024)

Some of the letters that have curves such as "S" must rise above the median line to appear similar.

Figure 1.3 Letters exciding the median line (23/10/2024)

Counterforms form outside the letters, such as the picture below.

Contrast are important for differentiating informartions.

RESEARCH

I did some research to get an idea of the headline design.

Figure 2.1 References for the word design UNITE (24/10/2024)

HEADLINE DESIGNS

I made 3 different headline designs with different arrangements and placements.

First design

I have a very simple headline design where the letters U,N,T,E are leaning to the middle to the I. The rest of the words just have a very simple arrangements.

Figure 2.2 First headline design (24/10/2024)

Second design

The second headline design has a change and the placement of the text as well. The word "UNITE" is still the same but the "to Visualise a Better World" got a change and its placed on the right beside the word UNITE.

Figure 2.3 Second headline design (24/10/2024)

Third design

I made a complete overhaul to the headline design, everything has been changed. The letters U,N,I,T,E are tightly spaced with each other to symbolize unity and the letter I is bigger than the others to symbolize a beacon of light. the rest of the words gets a change in fonts to make it interesting and less bland.

First Layout

The body of the text are separated into both pages.

Figure 2.5 First layout (24/10/2024)

Second Layout

The body of the text has a checker like pattern and is placed of the right page.

Figure 2.6 Second layout (24/10/2024)

Third Layout

The text placement are done where 40% of the text are placed on the left page and 60% of it are placed on the right page.

REVISIONS

The contents are placed both on the left and right page, there 1 paragraph on the left page and the rest of the paragraph are placed on the right page. The reason for this is so that it creates balance between the 2 pages, because Mr. Vinod stated that one of the pages cannot be too empty. I also changed the typeface from condensed to light because the condensed typeface reduces readability.

FEEDBACK HERE

Week 6 :

General feedback : Rivers should be avoided because it breaks reading rythm, we should avoid distorting typefaces, margins and grids are there to organize the contents inside.

Specific feedback : The word unite already emphasizes unite, but the second page is empty and needs more text.

Week 7 :

General feedback : The image should fit the margin, the line length doesn't exactly have to be 55-65, it can be 55-60 as well.

Specific feedback : Condensed typeface reduces readability, we should use other font if we can.

REFLECTIONS

Experience :
While doing task 2, i realised that it is actually pretty tricky to make a layout that actually stands out, from how we design the headline to the placement of the paragraphs, all of them needs attention, because if not then there will be no balance inside the layout.

Observations :
From my observations, simple placement of the letters can really make the headline standout without needing much change, as long as its effective and conveys meaning, it could work.

Findings :
During class, i found out that condensed typefaces can actually reduce readability, and because of that, we should try to stick with other fonts if we can.

Figure 5.1 TYPE MATTERS! (01/11/2024)

Typefaces such as Times New Roman, Joanna, Perpetua and Linotype Pilgrim are 20th-century typefaces that prints well on uncoated, good quality paper. Typefaces such as Monotype Scotch Roman No 1 (Series 46), Fournier, Bell, Georgian, Baskerville and Bulmer, as well as modern group of typefaces, such as Walbum and Bodoni print well on good quality coated papers.

Clash occurs when parts of different letter strike one another, usually  as a result of the inter character spacing being set too tight or the line feed being reduced to a smaller measurement than that of the type.

Ampersands should be used only in names, headings, and titles, or where space is limited, for example a table or chart that contains a lot of text, or a classified advertisement. In text settings 'and' should be spelled out, and generally ampersands should be avoided.
