Phase 1: Observation


This digital illustration depicts a warrior in the center, wearing detailed armor with engravings, fur-lined pauldrons, and a helmet that fully covers their face. White hair flows from beneath the helmet. The warrior holds a sword in their right hand and a round shield in their left. The lower armor includes layered plates with red cloth hanging from the waist.

The background consists of an orange and white sky, with a glowing circular shape behind the warrior’s head. Distant ruins are visible at the bottom. Contrast is evident between the fiery background and the cool metallic armor, making the figure stand out. The balance is symmetrical, with the warrior positioned centrally and evenly distributed details. The mix of smooth metal, soft fur, and flowing fabric creates texture variety.


Phase 2: Analysis

The artwork is structured to emphasize the warrior as the focal point. The glowing circle behind their head reinforces emphasis, drawing attention to their figure. The size of the character compared to the ruins establishes scale and proportion, making them appear dominant. The background is less detailed, adding depth.

The contrast between the bright sky and the dark armor enhances visibility and impact. The armor’s engravings and layered plates create unity through repetition. The flowing hair and fabric add movement, making the character appear dynamic rather than static. The circular shape behind the warrior guides the viewer’s eye and creates rhythm.


Phase 3: Interpretation

This artwork is based on Elden Ring, a popular action RPG developed by FromSoftware. The character depicted is Vargram, the Raging Wolf, one of the game’s NPCs and a powerful warrior. Vargram is known for his relentless fighting style and is associated with the Raging Wolf armor, which symbolizes strength and aggression.

Though the background landscape is very minimal, we can still see some ruined buildings which aligns with the game’s setting, where it is filled with decayed kingdoms and remnants of fallen civilizations. The dark fantasy aesthetic, combined with the warrior’s imposing stance, reflects Elden Ring’s signature style.

The artist effectively conveys the epic and mysterious atmosphere of Elden Ring through the use of contrast, emphasis, and balance. This artwork serves as a tribute to the game, capturing the visual and thematic depth of Elden Ring’s world.

Rationale :

For the first sketch (Fig. 2.2), I made Vargram land after he decapitated a dragon's head off in the jagged peaks. I tried to make a dynamic pose so that it's not flat. I applied emphasis and asymmetrical balance to help me illustrate this sketch.

Rationale : 

In the second sketch (Fig. 2.4), I made Vyke fight against a character named Blaidd in the Liurnia of the Lakes. I focused on the enemy this time around and just made the main protagonist more static. I applied asymmetrical balance, contrast, and emphasis for this sketch.

Rationale :

For the final sketch (Fig. 2.6), I made an unnamed character in Elden Ring, fighting against the boss Dragonlord Placidusax in the Crumbling Farum Azula. I made the character jump above the enemy, preparing to shoot an arrow at its gigantic head. I mainly applied asymmetrical balance, emphasis, and contrast.
