Week 1 - Culture & Design

1.  Significance of  Visuals

Visuals can be processed significantly faster than text and up to 40% of people respond more to visuals than text.

PROJECT 1 - PROPOSAL

Weekly Progress

Week 1 :

We were tasked to make a group consisting a total of 6 people, make one of the members into a group leader and create a whatsapp group where we can keep in touch with each other. We were also briefed about the module and the assignment.

 GROUP 33
1. Subhana Salim - Group Leader
2. Brendan Fedya
3. Sara Patel
4. Nikolas Shah Hannah Abdullah
5. Chika Clarissa Widjadja
6. Christopher Jayson Tan

Week 2 :

We discussed about the topic for our project and try to get the approval from the lecturer and worked on the project 1 proposal. We divided ourselves into 3 groups and each group contained 2 people where we need to worked on specific task which is :

1.Generating a drawing of Malaysian fusion food
2. Uniform design
3. Menu Design

Week 3 :

We consulted to the Lecturer and we settled on the topic ‘Effect of Westernisation on Malaysian Cuisine’ for our TikTok videos that we’re gonna make later on. We finalized our research and PPT as well as creating a 10 minute video of us talking about the project 1 proposal and the process.

My contribution :

I made the layout of the menu, color and typography along with my teammate, Chika. I also helped develop the logo idea for this fictional restaurant by finding the proper design and usage of the vegetable to reflect the traditional and “modern” elements of a westernized restaurant and positioned them to resemble a spoon and a fork crossing each other.

Final Submission

PROJECT 2 - FIELD STUDY

Week 4 :

We spend week 4 visiting an authentic Malaysian restaurant and a westernised Malaysian restaurant in SS15. For the authentic restaurant, we went to Nasi Kandar Pelita and Canai Cafe. In Nasi Kandar Pelita, we ordered nasi kandar and nasi biriyani as well as some drinks, while in Canai Cafe, we ordered roti canai and roti pisang. For the Westernised restaurant, we went to Jibril and ordered butter chicken chop pasta. We recorded ourselves reviewing these restaurants and shared our opinions regarding the food and determined the differences between authentic and westernised restaurants.

REFLECTION

This module has been intriguing from the very start, especially since we get to do a field study, which is quite rare in Creative Media. This was my first time participating in making TikTok review videos, and it definitely shows—I was quite stiff in front of the camera and it is something that i need to improve on. However, after seeing the final outcome, I was actually quite satisfied. The videos turned out entertaining and watchable.

We faced some challenges along the way such as trying to find a proper topic, doing the assignments the wrong way because we misunderstood MIB which caused us a lot of time lost and the work being mostly undone as well as the really hot weather and trying to find a parking spot during the shooting of our reviewing video but we still managed to do it on a timely manner. Overall, the experience of going out, eating together with my group, and reviewing a particular dish was really fun. Seeing everyone’s different opinions on the food was especially interesting since we all have our own unique tastes.
